Obviate.ai provides AI-powered legal support

Milwaukee-based legal tech startup Obviate.ai is on a mission to demystify contract review with its AI-powered tool that quickly flags risks, offers redlines, and empowers users to make informed decisions—without needing a law degree.

Founded by attorney and former clinical researcher Shantanu Singh, alongside engineer Thomas Glasser and go-to-market lead Sandeep Singh, Obviate.ai provides fast, plain-language contract analysis for startups, small businesses, and solo law practices. The platform is currently in beta, with pilot partnerships underway and more opportunities available.

“Our tool reviews and redlines contractual agreements in about 15 minutes—something that might take hours or days otherwise,” Singh said. “It’s designed to be accessible, even for someone like my dad reviewing his own manufacturing agreements.”

The platform uses proprietary AI to streamline the review process, generating what Singh calls a “guided autonomy” experience. Users receive a risk memo and can choose which parts of the contract they’d like to edit. If the system detects a need for human legal intervention, it prompts users to seek counsel.

Although Obviate.ai is not intended to replace lawyers, it offers a scalable way for legal professionals to serve more clients and for small businesses to better understand their legal exposure. Singh said the tool is particularly well-suited for early-stage companies negotiating contracts on their clients’ terms, rather than their own.

“For startups that can’t afford to hire a legal team, this can help them understand risk before signing,” Singh said.

The founders are seeking additional pilot partners as they refine the product. Ideal candidates include small- to mid-sized businesses that process a high volume of contracts and law practices with fewer than 10 attorneys.

In addition to building the AI platform, Obviate.ai is developing a prompt engineering course for knowledge workers, drawing from its expertise in AI and legal operations.
