Fortune Favors expands retail footprint with Gordon River Partners
Fortune Favors, a Cottage Grove-based gourmet snack company known for its flavored pecans and snack mixes, has completed an investment round with Gordon River Partners as it expands into national retail chains and increases production capacity. The partnership connects Fortune Favors with an investment group that has extensive experience in the nut and snack industry.
Co-founder and CEO Sam Mc Daniel is enthusiastic about the partnership because of the operational expertise Gordon River Partners brings to the business.
“One of the unique advantages of this particular partnership with this particular group that we had never seen before,” Mc Daniel said, “they have multiple nut companies in their present and past. So, they have a set of connections and links in the industry and experience with it that is way above and beyond what we’ve experienced so far.”
The company remains focused on the premium specialty food market while pursuing larger retail opportunities.
“We’re still aimed at that super premium niche in specialty retail,” he said. “But we’re able to go after a little bit more conventional retail and that has already popped up with our partnership with Super Target.”
Fortune Favors products recently launched in Super Target locations nationwide as part of the retailer’s curated charcuterie and entertaining section. The company also expects to appear in more than 1,200 Kroger locations later this year through a month-long feature tied to the grocery chain’s Murray’s Cheese specialty sections.
Mc Daniel said the partnership is also helping the company scale more efficiently. Fortune Favors had previously planned about $1.5 million in capital expenditures over three years, but guidance from Gordon River Partners significantly reduced those projected costs.
“We’ve cut that by 80%,” he said. “So, we’ll be able to deploy those funds into growing the business versus equipment.”
The company also plans to expand its national product demonstration strategy, which Mc Daniel described as a major driver of consumer awareness and repeat purchases. Fortune Favors recently hired marketing strategist Jason Smith to help lead the effort. According to Mc Daniel, the company conducted 43 product demonstrations around the country during the first 12 days of May alone.
“When people have the product, they are very happy,” he said. “Our repurchase rates are really high. Once we are there in people’s minds, we’re good. It’s that trial that’s the hardest to get.”
Even as the company scales nationally, Mc Daniel said Wisconsin will remain central to Fortune Favors’ operations.
“We will never leave the Madison area,” he said. “Our base facility will always be here. Being part of the Wisconsin startup and food community is something that we’re really proud of. We believe that it’s one of the best in the country.”
