Punk Audio blends music personalization and hearing enhancement
Punk Audio, an emerging startup with plans to set roots in Milwaukee, is aiming to redefine how we experience sound. Founded by Mike Murphy, a seasoned audio industry professional, the company is developing a platform that combines music personalization with hearing enhancement technology.
Set to launch in early 2025, Punk Audio’s software leverages an app-based system that performs a dual hearing and music preference assessment. The results allow users to customize sound settings tailored to their hearing capabilities and musical tastes.
A niche within a niche
“We’re creating a new category we call ‘personal sound,’” Murphy explained. “It’s about addressing the unique audio needs of individuals, whether they have mild hearing loss or just want a more tailored music experience.”
The platform aims to serve two primary audiences: individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss and music enthusiasts seeking enhanced audio personalization. Initially, the company plans to offer over-the-counter hearing aids and premium headphones optimized through its proprietary music and hearing exam system.
A patent-pending innovation
At the core of Punk Audio’s solution is a music exam process inspired by established hearing test methods but adapted for music. “Instead of traditional pure-tone tests, we use music samples to create a personalized audio profile,” Murphy said. The platform’s patent-pending system combines hearing assessments with user input to generate precise sound settings for different genres.
Opportunities and challenges ahead
While Punk Audio is still months away from launching its minimum viable product (MVP), the team is exploring ways to connect with potential users and industry partners. The company is particularly focused on underserved markets like the hearing-impaired community, where music enjoyment is often overlooked.
“Our goal is to address a gap in the market,” Murphy noted. “People with hearing aids often struggle to enjoy music because most devices are optimized for speech, not sound quality.”
The startup also sees potential partnerships with audiology professionals to extend its reach to individuals who may need prescription-grade hearing aids beyond what Punk Audio’s over-the-counter options provide.
As Punk Audio moves closer to its 2025 debut, the company is seeking beta testers to refine its offering. “We’re looking for feedback from the hearing-impaired community and music enthusiasts alike,” Murphy said.
With its innovative approach Punk Audio is poised to make waves in both the audio and healthcare industries. Its unique blend of technology and artistry underscores the possibilities provided by emerging technologies.
