TalkToMedi brings AI medical receptionist to Wisconsin

The front desk staff are on the front lines of the healthcare system. Reaching a medical provider shouldn’t be difficult, but missed calls, long hold times and overburdened front-desk staff can create headaches for both providers and patients. TalkToMedi, a startup in the gBETA Applied AI Lab program at Waukesha County Technical College, is working to change that with its artificial intelligence-powered receptionist designed specifically for healthcare practices.

Launched in Toronto in 2025, TalkToMedi was founded by CEO Kino Song, COO Alvin Cheng and CTO Hao Ran Liu. The company developed an electronic health record (EHR)-compatible AI voice receptionist that answers incoming calls, helps schedule appointments, responds to common questions and routes urgent matters to the appropriate next step. Cheng said the system was built specifically for medical environments, where accuracy and workflow integration are especially important. It can connect with EHR systems to verify patient information, manage requests such as prescription refill inquiries and transfer unresolved matters to human staff. If a caller presents a potential emergency, the platform can direct them to seek immediate medical help.

The founders first developed an earlier healthcare AI concept through university competitions and hackathons. After winning more than $50,000 in non-equity funding, the team continued refining the business and ultimately shifted toward a voice AI receptionist after identifying strong demand from medical practitioners. Cheng said TalkToMedi is now operating in 20 clinics across Canada.

As the company looked to expand into the United States, Wisconsin emerged as a strategic landing spot through the gBETA Applied AI Lab program at WCTC. The free accelerator supports early-stage companies with roots in Waukesha County and focuses on ventures prepared to grow through coaching, mentorship and sales development.

Cheng said Wisconsin’s healthcare and business environment, combined with lower competitive saturation than larger markets, made the state appealing. He said the company hopes to establish long-term roots locally and has already begun introducing itself to the regional startup and healthcare communities.

That outreach includes hosting Drinks on Us: Healthcare Night on Monday, April 27, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Moe’s Irish Pub in Wauwatosa, where healthcare professionals can gather informally and meet the TalkToMedi team.

TalkToMedi will also present as part of the gBETA Spring 2026 Showcase on Wednesday, April 29, from 5 to 8 p.m. at WCTC.
