The Maple Dude: six generations of sweet tradition earn a Coolest Thing nomination
Each year, Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce’s Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin contest introduces residents to the innovative and sometimes unexpected products made across the state. While many of this year’s semifinalists hail from the Milwaukee 7 region, one standout competitor comes from outside the area, The Maple Dude, based in Granton.
The Sternitzky family has been making maple syrup since 1858. Company founder Tim Sternitzky turned the family’s long history of hobby syrup-making into a commercial enterprise in 2016 when he launched The Maple Dude. The growing company offers everything from traditional maple syrup to unique maple-infused products.
“People are always surprised by the variety,” Sternitzky said. “We’ve got syrup, candies, and maple cream, but we also sell maple-based lip balm, shampoo, and soap made by a local artisan under The Maple Dude brand. They’re great products and a lot of fun to share.”
This year, The Maple Shot 10-Pack Carton earned the company a place among the contest’s final eight. Each 1-ounce pouch delivers 100% pure Wisconsin maple syrup in a tear-top, travel-friendly size. Vegan and paleo approved, the BPA-free pouches are designed for camping trips, road travel, or an on-the-go energy boost during endurance sports.
Sternitzky was surprised to learn about the nomination. “I didn’t nominate it myself,” he said with a laugh. “I just got an email saying we were in the contest. But it’s been fun. Local radio stations have reached out, and I’ve definitely noticed more interest and traffic.”
As The Maple Dude has grown, so has its reach. The company’s syrup and maple cream can be found in Festival Foods and Meijer stores across Wisconsin and the Chicago area, as well as the company’s online shop.
The production process remains family-driven: Sternitzky’s father still helps around the shop, his daughter manages social media, and his son has expressed interest in continuing the family legacy.
For now, Sternitzky is focused on the contest. “We’re hoping to make it to the final four,” he said. “Winning would mean valuable exposure for a small company like ours.”
Voting for the Final Four in the Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin continues through October 14 at madeinwis.com.
