Tip a ScRxipt wins health tech track at Healthcare Innovation Pitch
Milwaukee-based Tip a ScRxipt earned first place in the Health Tech track of the Healthcare Innovation Pitch Competition on October 8, securing a $25,000 non-dilutive investment and advancement to the Great Lakes Healthcare Innovation Pitch Contest, which will be held in Madison on November 5.
Founded in 2020 by Chad Johnson, Tip a ScRxipt helps healthcare organizations provide supplemental benefits through restricted-spend debit cards. These cards allow funds to be used only for approved purchases that support a participant’s health and wellness, items like prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, groceries and even utilities.
“We make it easy for healthcare plans to provide supplemental benefits in a compliant way,” Johnson said. “Our restricted-spend cards ensure funds are used for approved items that actually support a person’s health and wellness.”
The platform is especially valuable for the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), which provides comprehensive, coordinated health care services to older adults who want to remain in their communities rather than enter nursing homes. There are 195 PACE organizations operating in 33 states and the District of Columbia, serving more than 86,000 participants nationwide.
PACE programs receive funding through Medicare, Medicaid, and private sources, enabling participants to access a range of medical and social services tailored to their needs. Tip a ScRxipt’s platform automates much of the administrative work for these providers, ensuring transactions are compliant with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) rules.
“Each card is customized and automatically approves or denies purchases at the point of sale, so providers don’t have to review receipts or chase reimbursements,” Johnson said.
Tip a ScRxipt offers PACE users multiple customer service options, including a live call center, a mobile app, and an online portal that allows users to check item eligibility before making a purchase. For providers, the company charges a fixed administrative rate, simplifying billing and ensuring consistent service costs.
“PACE organizations serve a smaller number of seniors, but their needs are complex,” Johnson explained. “We help them manage benefits efficiently so their focus can stay on care, not paperwork.”
Since its founding, Tip a ScRxipt has steadily built traction. The company launched as part of the Young Enterprising Society’s Blueprint Accelerator in 2020, earning $25,000 in funding. It went on to win $10,000 from Project Pitch It in 2021, joined gener8tor later that year with a $100,000 investment, and raised $500,000 in seed funding from Gateway Capital Partners.
Tip a ScRxipt is also developing new tools to expand its impact. Johnson said the company is building a restricted copay assistance card in collaboration with new institutional clients. In addition, the platform is integrating AI-driven transaction analysis to provide health insights and further ensure compliance.
As Tip a ScRxipt prepares for the next round of competition in November, Johnson offered advice for entrepreneurs who have followed Tip a ScRxipt’s journey: “Know your why, because the what will change.”
