A second look at First Look Forum
The UW-Milwaukee Research Foundation, The Medical College of Wisconsin’s Office of Technology Development, and Marquette University’s Office of University Relations presented the Annual First Look Forum last week.
Hosted by WEC Energy Group, founders, funders, and other members of the Milwaukee startup ecosystem gathered at the company headquarters to learn about innovations with the potential for commercialization being developed at the schools.

BonePro for Bone Health, presented by Dr. Priyatha Premnath of UW-Milwaukee.
Dr. Premnath is developing technology that promotes bone healing and regeneration. The team has discovered a treatment with the potential to overcome age-related complications that often impede the bone healing process. The team hopes to begin testing the treatment on animals soon.
Opening the Black Box and Changing AI, presented by Dr. Andrew S. Nencka of the Medical College of Wisconsin.
The team is studying deep neural networks used in AI technology and has developed a method to map the functional sub-networks within deep neural networks. The technology could lead to more interpretable, controllable, and efficient AI systems.
Lower Cost & Longer Life for Power Electronics, presented by Dr. Chanyeop Park of UW-Milwaukee.
Dr. Park and his team have created a patent-pending innovation to address partial electric discharge. The discovery will improve the performance and expand the life of electronic devices. The project has raised $11.3 million in research funding and is seeking entry into the marketplace.
Smelling Profits in a Smell-Producing Device, presented by Dr. Krishna M. Pillai of UW-Milwaukee.
Dr. Pillai and his team have developed a device to improve the performance of wick-based air fresheners and other plug-in scent products. The motorized solution can be scaled from a single room to an arena.
Saying Goodbye to Endotracheal Tube Misplacement: A Near-Infrared Device for Safer Intubation, presented by Dr. Bing Yu of Marquette University.
A team from Marquette University and the Medical College of Wisconsin have collaborated to create a non-invasive, operator-free, and highly accurate device that monitors the placement of breathing tubes in critically ill patients.
Next-Generation Lyme Disease Vaccines, presented by Dr. Rob Lochhead of the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Dr. Lochhead and his team have developed a new method of preventing Lyme disease by focusing on T-cell antigen. This new technique is expected to produce long-lasting and broadly protective immunity to the disease that affects an estimated half a million Americans annually.
Praximae: AI-enabled 3D Education, presented by Dr. Joseph Wall and Dr. Kevin Rich of Marquette University.
Praximae is an AI-based learning tool that creates seven to ten-minute education modules optimized for attention and retention. The tool is being designed to be used in both academia and to aid in workplace training.
